Yes, we are talking about the Cat Pose, something that we aim to focus on in this post. 

The Cat Pose, or Marjariasana, is a basic posture for daily practice. Despite being simple, it promises many benefits to the mind and body. It works on the mobility, flexibility, and stability of muscles near your spine. You can also experience the benefits of wrist extension, a strong core, and shoulder stability. You can include this posture in many ways in your routine.

Origin of the Cat Pose

The Cat Pose is also known as Marjariasana or Bidalasana in Sanskrit.  Both terms can be easily split for a better understanding. Marjariasana is made from Marjari, meaning cat, and Asana refers to pose. Similarly, Bidalasana includes Bidala, which also refers to the cat. 

There have been traces of a similar yoga posture in Primary Gymnastics. It is a Danish Text written in the early 20th century by Neil Bukh. There is evidence of the existence of similar yoga poses in history. The Hatha Ratnavali, a Hatha Yoga text from the 17th century, contains a similar pose called Vyagrahasana or the Tiger pose.

Haṭhābhyāsapaddhati, a yoga text from the 17th-18th century, is said to have the earliest description of the Cat Pose. It is an upturned cat pose, also known as Marjarottanasana. 

Benefits of the Cat Pose 

Here are the benefits of practicing the Cat Pose:

Strengthening 

Many yoga postures require wrist extension, and the Cat Pose can help with that. It works on the mobility and flexibility of the wrist and shoulder areas. Regular practice of this posture can help with the strengthening and stabilization of the shoulder joints. This yoga pose compresses the abdominal and chest muscles and strengthens them further. The yoga posture expands and opens the shoulder blades and shoulders.

Relieving Tension from the Pelvic Floor 

Getting in and out of the curved shape is an essential step of the Cat Pose. This posture can work on muscle tension in the pelvic floor and vaginal area.  It is expected to relieve women practitioners from issues like pelvic pain and urinary incontinence. After all, good pelvic health can support bowel, bladder, sexual, and reproductive functions.

The Cat Pose includes the opening and closing stretches, which promote blood flow and circulation. This results in more blood flow to your back’s muscles and tissues. The Seated Cat Pose

The Seated variation is a slightly differing form of the Cat Pose. Like the traditional pose, this one can offer similar benefits- stretching your spine and releasing tension in the neck, shoulders, and back. To practice this, you can:

  • Sit down or get in the Vajrayana.
  • Raise your hands, weave your fingers, and direct your palm upwards.
  • Bring your hands forward and curve your back. Like the Cat Pose, you can curve down here with an exhale.
  • You can come out of this curved spine by inhaling and raising your hands.
The Standing Variations of the Cat Pose

Like the earlier two variations, the Standing Cat Pose offers core strengthening, better posture, and increased spinal flexibility. At the same time, it makes these benefits accessible to those uncomfortable with the other earlier variations. Here are the steps to practice it:

  • Stand, but make sure your legs are a distance from the width of your hips.
  • Bend your knees slightly and place your hands on your thighs.
  • Pull your abdomen and chest in and curve your body.
  • Get your spine back into its initial straight position with exhalation.
