Today, we will learn about bringing balance to your body with yoga as your tool.  The mountain pose, also called tadasana, connects us with balance and alignment in the body. It lays the foundation for several other yoga poses practiced while standing. It comes with many possible benefits, influencing physical health and deeper awareness. This pose can balance seven chakras of your body while promising much more, which we will discuss in the post. 

The Origin of the Mountain Pose

The mountain pose is known as tadasana in Sanskrit. Tadasana can be split into two terms- tada and asana. Tada refers to the mountain, and asana means posture. It is also described as Samasthiti, where sama refers to equal, balanced, or level, and sthiti means standing. 

The term tadasana simplifies understanding the different traits of the mountain pose. A reference to a mountain can help you learn the qualities of the pose. With tadasana, you expect strength, stability, and grounding. They collectively contribute to the mountain’s ability to stand securely. 

Another interesting tale of the mountain pose exists in Hindu mythology. After a failed attempt to master three skills altogether, Sage Narada felt dejected and sad. Lord Bhrama advised him to practice tadasana to calm his restlessness and build a connection between his mind, body, and breath. 

There are traces of tadasana in Vyayama Dipika from 1896. It was presented in the old extract of danda exercises. However, this pose or asana was not a part of hatha yoga till the 20th century. 

Tadasana, or the mountain pose, is used as a transition. It lets the body shift smoothly from the previous pose to the coming one.

Benefits of Mountain Pose 

The mountain pose, or tadasana, comes with many possible benefits. It can help enhance posture and bring deep awareness. Here are ways the mountain pose can offer a positive influence on your body:

Better Posture and Spinal Alignment

Tadasana lets you align your body from the crown of your head to the feet. This improves your focus and concentration and lets you understand every part of your body. You are more aware of your breath and become body-conscious. Posture correction is another benefit of this pose, which, when habitual, can be seen in different standing poses.

Stability 

The practice of tadasana neutralizes your chest, diaphragm, and breath. Your spine is alert and properly aligned. As a result, your chest and upper body feel the breath. Similarly, placing your feet completely on the ground can help you with your proprioceptive awareness. All of this can bring stability and awareness.  

Strengthening and Stretching 

Tadasana can tone your lower body, including your glutes, shins, ankles, feet, and thighs, while strengthening your knees and joints. Your knees and ankles become stronger. The toning of your body, resulting from regular practice, can lay a strong foundation for performing other asanas. 

Balancing Emotions 

Tadasana can make you feel energetic while stabilizing your body and mind. Its regular practice lets you be mindful and more aware of your body. Mindfulness has been known to lower stress levels and make you calmer. It can promote emotional regulation, helping you effectively manage difficult feelings. 

Opening Energy Channels

Tadasana can balance and activate your root chakra, or Muladhara, helping you feel more stable and safe. It promotes life energy or prana throughout the body. Its practice requires you to stand tall and open your body’s energy channels. This allows the prana shakti to flow better and more freely across your body.

Yoga is known for its impeccable benefits for our physical and mental well-being. Tadasana, one of them, offers a balance of emotions, stability, strengthening, and stretching. It helps you become more aware of your body. It’s a practice that tones the lower body parts, including the glutes, feet, thighs, and ankles. It is easy to practice and can lay the foundation for many other yoga poses you may want to practice.
